Achievements gained either by the Department or the University as a corporate body.
The University of Edinburgh has been recognised for its health and safety performance by winning a prestigious International Safety Award. The award was given by one of the world’s leading advocates of workplace health and safety, the British Safety Council, and is supported by the Health and Safety Executive.
The award acknowledges the commitment that winners have made to improving corporate health and safety and rewards the success of achieving high safety standards. With over 600 applications from across the world, the win is a true testament to the University’s dedication to the health and safety of its workforce.
The International Safety Awards are open to all industries and sectors from across the globe and are independently adjudicated panel of experts who look for hard evidence of how an organisation maintains acceptable standards of health and safety on the ground.
Lawrence Dickson, Training and Audit Co-ordinator from the Health and Safety Department was formally presented with the University's International Safety Award by Julie Nerney, British Safety Council Chief Executive at an award ceremony on 20th May 2011 in London.
This year we decided to raise the bar for the International Safety Awards and by doing so we have seen an exceptional standard of applications. I would like to congratulate all winners on this achievement and they should all be very proud. It is great to have such dedicated organisations with us on the journey towards excellent health and safety standards

The University of Edinburgh successfully achieved the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the HWL award in May 2010.
For the award the University was assessed on it’s approach to a number of areas including health and safety, occupational health, employability, supporting staff attendance, healthy eating, physical activity, smoking, mental health, health and the environment and community health and wellbeing, amongst others.
This award recognises the University's commitment to enhancing health and wellbeing in the workplace.
Alastair Reid, Director of Health and Safety and Karen Darling, Deputy Director, were formally presented with the University's Gold HWL Award by Melanie Hornett, Nurse Director. NHS Lothian at an award ceremony on 4th October 2010.
The ceremony was held for those organisations in the Lothians who have achieved HWL awards in the last 12 Months. The presentation was hosted by the University of Edinburgh in the John McIntyre Conference Centre.
The Department achieved the IiP Scotland Standard in August 2010 after undergoing a rigourous assessment programme designed to align the internal management and staff performance procedures against a set standard produced by IiP Scotland.
