Our Aim
The aims and activities of the Protocol Office.
The aim of the Protocol Office is to create goodwill, nurture relationships, develop new friends for, and enhance and project the prestige and standing of, The University of Edinburgh.
The service we provide is to ensure consistent, high quality and responsible management of university ceremonial and hospitality activities.
We aim to provide guidance and assistance as necessary with other events which are not centrally managed.
What is Protocol?
The body of law, customs and practices governing diplomatic conduct is called protocol. It is derived from the Greek words proto (first) and collon (glued), meaning that the first page of a manuscript, often serving as a summary of a treaty or diplomatic dispatch, must be glued to the outside of the document or volume.
What we do
- Provide day to day management of ceremonial and hospitality activities.
- Plan, coordinate and implement programmes and security for special events.
- Maintain an effective working relationship with areas who might have an interest in events - Communications and Public Affairs, Development and Alumni Services and Edinburgh Research and Innovation.
We assist with and advise on:
- Event coordination
- Facility design
- Logistics and security
- Protocol and cultural issues
- Programming, design, production and realisation
