The aims and activities of the Protocol Office.

The aim of the Protocol Office is to create goodwill, nurture relationships, develop new friends for, and enhance and project the prestige and standing of, The University of Edinburgh.
The service we provide is to ensure consistent, high quality and responsible management of university ceremonial and hospitality activities.
We aim to provide guidance and assistance as necessary with other events which are not centrally managed.
The body of law, customs and practices governing diplomatic conduct is called protocol. It is derived from the Greek words proto (first) and collon (glued), meaning that the first page of a manuscript, often serving as a summary of a treaty or diplomatic dispatch, must be glued to the outside of the document or volume.
