Casual work: guidance for staff

All casual and ad hoc work carried out by research students should be approved by the Teaching Organisation before the event takes place.

Approval to employ a research student as a Tutor or Demonstrator on a particular course is given in the form of an Hours To Be Notified contract administered by Human resources at the request of the participating School.

An HTBN contract does not cover ad hoc and casual work, including:

Academic and administrative staff wishing to employ research students for events considered to be ad hoc or casual work should, in the first instance, notify the Deputy Manager of the Teaching Organisation of their intention to use research students for the event.

It is the responsibility of the Deputy Manager of the Teaching Organisation to give approval for staff to pay research students for work at an event, and to record each instance of work in order that the research student is paid for the work they carry out. Rates of pay for ad hoc events must also be approved by the Deputy Manager of the Teaching Organisation.

Staff MUST contact the Deputy Manager of the Teaching Organisation for approval of casual or ad hoc work at an event before asking a research student to carry out the work.

Academic and administrative staff who are unsure whether an event is covered by an HTBN contract, should consult the Deputy manager of the Teaching Organisation.
