| Title: | Forecasting and data assimilation of atmospheric composition at ECMWF - The MACC project |
| Venue: | Room 302, Crew Building |

| Abstract: | Forecasting and data assimilation of atmospheric composition have become important activities at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast as part of the MACC project (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) MACC makes daily global forecasts and has produced a re-analysis (2003-present)of greenhouse gases, aerosols and reactive gases by combining model results with satellite observations of atmospheric composition and biomass burning. MACC data are freely available and can be used for campaign support, provision of boundary conditions, climatological studies or model evaluation. We give an overview of the MACC project. We present in more detail the modelling system for reactive gases and its application for the assimilation of satellite observations. We will discuss the benefit of chemical data assimilation using two examples: the forecast of the severe pollution caused by fires in Russia in 2010 and the forecast of volcanic SO2 plumes. |
