Learning, teaching and research training
We offer a broad range of courses in Geosciences.
Taught programmes
Around 900 undergraduates are admitted each year to read subjects in the Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences or Geography.
The School also organises a variety of postgraduate taught programmes and currently admits over 150 students each year, 40% of whom are from outside the UK.
Many programmes involve collaboration with other bodies, notably the Scottish Agricultural College, the University of Edinburgh Business School, and Heriot-Watt University.
Research training
The School has around 160 PhD students and a further 30 undertaking Masters by Research.
We offer studentships supported by NERC, ESRC (1+3 model) and other funding bodies.
Many research projects involve collaboration with other Schools in this University and other HEIs as well as organisations such as:
- Scottish Agricultural College
- Macaulay Land Research Institute
- British Geological Survey
- Centre for Ecology and Hydrology
- Industry partners
The School has over 120 RAs or PDRAs. Their training and development, as well as that of research students, is managed by the School’s Research Training and Development section. All students and RAs have access to university resources and training.
The School’s annual Research Conference is a highlight of the year. It showcases the work of first and second year research students and provides opportunities for RAs to present and chair sessions.
