Overview of the Switch and Save Energy Reduction Campaign.

In the Climate Action Plan 2010, the University Court adopted a target of 29% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2020.
The University has invested heavily in engineering and technical measures to assist in achieving this target, including £12 million to install three combined heat and power plants to generate electricity and heat on site.
In 2006 the Switch and Save Energy Reduction Campaign Phase 1 was launched in a bid to complement these works and introduce the people component to energy saving.
The campaign targets all staff and students to develop good housekeeping practices in an effort to reduce the energy they consume.
The key message of the campaign is that every member of the University can help by engaging in the simplest of activities, switching off a light when leaving a room, or switching off non-essential electrical equipment, are easy but effective ways to save energy.
Posters and stickers are displayed throughout the University estate to remind people of the energy saving message, a network of Energy Coordinators and Energy Reps has been established and trained within Schools and administrative units, and a campaign film has been screened within a number of key locations to encourage behavioural change in staff and students.
Please contact the Energy Office for more information on the Switch and Save campaign, or to find out what you can do to help us achieve our target.
