How asbestos insulation board (AIB) might be used and what it looks like.

Used as fire protection on the back of a service riser door. The corner is missing and the damaged edge is exposed.

If you discover or cause damage like this it must be reported to the Asbestos Management Team.

Asbestos products can not be easily distinguished from non-asbestos products.

No work to the fabric of University buildings or plant can take place until you have checked the asbestos register and been authorised by Estates and Buildings.

Fixed ceiling tiles were often made from AIB.

AIB is usually found inside premises, but can be found in weather protected exterior areas such as porches.

AIB typically contains between 15-25% Amosite (brown) asbestos and was used for fire protection, thermal and acoustic insulation.

Chrysotile (white) asbestos is also commonly found in AIB products.
