The University of Edinburgh (UoE) currently has three general waste and recycling streams available for use. These are Mixed Recycling, Paper & Cardboard and Landfill.
Currently, the system is to actively segregate out Paper & Cardboard in to dedicated bins provided by our Waste & Recycling Supplier as part of our contract, whilst sending normal office waste (stored in under-desk bins) offsite for Mixed Recycling and separating out specific waste (mainly from Laboratories and Canteens) for Landfill.
The Waste and Recycling team are looking to improve this system by phasing small capacity, individual bins out of high use areas and introducing larger capacity, shared bins whilst also introducing Landfill bins more widely within UoE buildings.
This will allow us to raise awareness amongst staff and students, increase recycling rates, prepare for the segregation of food waste for composting and reduce contamination in the mixed recycling stream.
