Main Library Phased Refurbishment

The phased refurbishment/remodelling of the main library is well underway. The redesign preserves the best of the Sir Basil Spence A listed building, while transforming it for the 21st century.

Sections one, two, three, four, five, and six have been completed.

About the project and key dates

Section 1

Section one which addressed the fifth and sixth floors for the University's collections, is complete.

Section 2

Section two, which serves the need of students, with the high use books collection, a variety of study spaces and the helpdesk, which involved the remodelling of the ground floor completed in June 2009.

Section 3

Section three was completed in February 2010. This provides a variety of study spaces and pods as well as a new suite of meeting rooms.

Section 4

Section four was completed in September 2010. This provides a complete new book floor and additional study spaces.

Section 5

Section 5 was completed in June 2011. This provides additional space for collections to one half of the floor. Students Services (careers, counselling and disability services) are also located on this floor.

Section 6

Section 6 (fourth floor) was completed in February 2012. This provides space for the collections and an additional 600 study spaces.

Section 7

Section 7 (lower ground floor) started on site in March 2012 and completed in March 2013. This provides office accomodation for Information Services staff.
