I am the Development co-ordinator of General English Summer Advanced Courses and a lecturer at ELTC, where I have worked since 1982. I teach, write and direct various courses in English as a Foreign Language, including courses for teachers. I lecture on the MSc in Language Teaching, and supervise PhD students in this field. My main research interests are in classroom processes, language testing and teaching literature in a second language. I am the editor of Edinburgh Working Papers in Applied Linguistics (EWPAL).
I was born in Leicester and attended the Universities of Durham (BA German), Liverpool (PGCE), and Leeds (MA Linguistics and Language Teaching). I taught German at Frensham Heights School, Surrey, and English at 3 schools in Germany. I have worked briefly at schools and a clinic within the Rudolf Steiner movement. I have made extensive translations of poetry, chess books and academic articles.
From 1978-82 I was a Research Fellow at the University of Stirling, working on 2 large-scale studies of foreign language teaching in Scottish secondary schools.
