Background

Mairin obtained a first degree in German, Italian and European Studies at the University of Bath. She then went ton complete a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages (French and German) at the University of Oxford where she undertook an MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. While at Oxford Mairin also completed an MSc in Educational Research Methodology before taking up an ESRC studentship to complete a doctorate investigating the impact of formal LModern Language instruction on the development of active European citizenship. Mairin's DPhil also examined adolescents' attitudes and motivations for language learning.

Mairin then went on to work as a Postdoctoral Research Officer on an ESRC project directed by Professor Ernesto Macaro, examining the comparative effects of L1/L2 use on the acquisition of vocabulary.

From Oxford Mairin moved to Newcastle University to work as a Teaching Fellow in Education before taking up a position as Lecturer at Moray House.

Mairin has worked as a Modern Languages teacher, an EFL teacher and an EFL teacher trainer in a variety of countries and acrosss several cultural and instituional contexts.
