Thomson's Land (Rm 2.05) Background
The first ten years of my career were spent getting people lost in the wilds of North America and Southeast Asia - all in the name of the participants' personal development (and mine too!). Since completing my PhD on Overseas youth expeditions, I have become more concerned with how people learn about "place" by undertaking journeys within their local communities. I am also interested in using social theory to examine outdoor learning practice.
Qualification:
- BPE (McMaster)
- MS (Minnesota State)
- PhD (Southampton)
Principal interests
- Learning through journeys outside the classroom (local and far away!)
- Using social theory to examine outdoor education practice

- Clare Nugent: Nature’s kindergarten: A comparative ethnographic study
- Sho Shimoyada: Open Gardens in the UK
