Why choose our Language Teaching programme?

The MSc in Language Teaching is designed to develop the professional knowledge and skills of those with an interest in language and/or the teaching of language.

It is for you if:

  • You are directly involved in the teaching of foreign or second languages in the classroom.
  • You have some other role in foreign or second language education, for example in management, testing, curriculum/programme design, course book production or programme evaluation.

It is specifically designed to meet your needs if:

  • You are a teacher of a language other than English as a foreign or second language.
  • You are a teacher of English as a foreign or second language, especially if you have native or native-like proficiency in English and you wish to gain a qualification which meets the British Council's guidelines for TEFL Qualifying employment at accredited institutions in the UK.
  • You have no teaching experience but are interested in the teaching of a language other than English as a foreign or second language.

The programme draws on the University of Edinburgh's long and internationally recognised experience in language education and applied linguistics. It is based in The Moray House School of Education, but some of its courses, including core courses, are taught within the English Language Teaching Centre and the department of Linguistics and English Language.

You can study for the MSc in Language Teaching either full time (12 months) or part time (24 months).
