Outline Biography

Yati Durant studied composition at the Hochschule für Music in Cologne, Germany with Krzysztof Meyer, and electronic composition with Hans Ulrich Humpert (Diplom Komposition 200 3, Diplom Elektronische Komposition 2006).  In 1998 he studied composition with Philip Lasser and Narcis Bonet at La Schola Cantorum in Paris, France.  In 2002 he studied composition with George Crumb at the Europäische Akadamie für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Montepulciano, Italy.  In 2006, he received the prestigious first Meisterklasse Konzertexam from the Hochschule für Music in Cologne, Germany for his critically acclaimed new score for orchestra and surround electronics to Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 classic silent film The Battleship Potemkin.  Yati Durant was appointed Lecturer of Music, Sound and Moving Image at the University of Edinburgh in 2010.

Yati Durant is known for his extreme versatility in both serious concert and film music, often utilizing electronic and jazz elements in combination with classical instrumentations in his compositions.  Yati is a two time recipient of the U.S. Department of State Federal Assistance Award with the 2006 premiere of Śpiewy Polskie / Polish Songs at the Amerika Haus Köln and the 2008 premiere of Lady Windermere’s Fan at the Kölner Philharmonie.  In 2008 Yati scored and performed the music to the documentary film Erika Rabau – Der Puck von Berlin, which was premiered at that year’s Berlin International Film Festival, and received the 3rd Pl. Panorama Public Prize.  Further accolades in that year include a BAFA National Commerce Film Award Nomination for the WDR/ARD TV documentary Ein Klavier geht um die Welt with scoring and a live New York performance of the ARD commissioned work for pianoforte and soprano Śpieszmy się/ Love Now.  At the 2009 Strade del Cinema International Silent Film festival in Aosta, Italy, Yati’s score to Charles Chaplin’s The Vagabond was selected as a finalist of the Concorso Giovani Musicisti Europei. 

Yati Durant’s critically acclaimed live score to the German expressionist silent-film classic Von Morgens bis Mitternachts is released on CD and DVD by Film Dienst/Normal Records and the Filmmuseum München.

Currently, Yati Durant is the Music Director and Conductor of the newly formed Edinburgh Film Music Orchestra.
