About
Since 2005, the Institute for Music in Human and Social Development has brought together researchers, theorists and practitioners from disciplines including psychology, medicine, neuroscience, informatics, physics, education, linguistics and music. Our aim is to inform both the scientific understanding and practical application of music as a therapeutic, educational, artistic and social tool.
The initiative is based on our range of experience in music informatics, musical acoustics, the psychology and neuroscience of music, community music, music and disability and orchestral outreach, as well as pioneering work in the uses of music in therapy and social reconstruction in zones of conflict such as the Balkans, Caucasus and the Middle East. This range of activities is supported by strong community links with orchestras, schools, hospitals, prisons, NGOs and local authorities.
The aims of the Institute are:
- To strengthen the theoretical and scientific basis of educational, therapeutic and social practice in music
- To support the development of methodologies for intervention in these areas
- To be an active partner in the implementation of therapeutic, educational and social development programs related to music
- To investigate the complexities of musical intelligence and musical communication
