The focus of this Masters programme is the history of Scottish art and visual culture, patronage, collecting and the cultural material environment. It combines close academic study with an internship in a local institution.

This is the only Masters programme in Scottish Art in the UK. It is concerned with the production and reception of works of art and artefacts, including questions of display and institutional context. Drawing on the collections of Edinburgh and its environs, this course stresses a direct engagement with objects and develops a critical approach to issues of context and display.

The programme reflects the strenghts of Edinburgh as an environment for studying the history of Scottish art at a high level. Edinburgh is home to numerous world class galleries, museums and libraries, and hosts great archives of Scottish art and artists from all historic periods.
