This is our general taught MSc in the History of Art, especially suitable for those who do not yet want to specialise in a particular period.
About the programme
The MSc in History of Art, Theory and Display provides students with a number of ways to explore their chosen field and their further careers in the area of History of Art.
This unique programme combines academic study of the History of Art with more vocational elements, including an internship possibility in a local museum or gallery.
The degree aims to provide a thorough grounding in Art History, in both the pre- and post-1800 period. Half a student’s option course choices must be in the pre-1800 period and half in the post-1800 period. The Internship is an optional course choice: if students don’t want to take the Internship then they can choose two further option courses instead.
The title of the programme, History of Art, Theory and Display, describes the particular combination of approaches and skills that are emphasised:
- works of art emanate from historical contexts
- their interpretation assumes theoretical frameworks
- they are encountered as physical objects in relation to practices and concepts of display
Correspondingly, the programme incorporates:
- a range of specialist options on art produced in particular historical contexts covering both pre-1800 and post-1800 periods
- core courses on theories and methodologies of art-historical study, and on the culture of display, as exemplified by the important galleries that can be visited and studied in Edinburgh
- a range of internship opportunities in Edinburgh’s museums and galleries, OR further option-course choices.
