Edinburgh has a lively research culture, based around the University and other arts and educational institutions.
History of Art runs a weekly research seminar series, which postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to attend.
This features presentations by members of the History of Art and other subject areas, colleagues from other institutions, and visiting scholars.
These seminars are held every Thursday at 5.15pm in Lecture Room 1, Minto House, during both semesters.
In addition, History of Art runs the prestigious annual Watson Gordon Lecture series, held in the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre at the National Galleries of Scotland. In 2011-12 the lecture will be given by Professor Mark Hallett on Thursday 3 November 2011 at 6:00pm.
Postgraduate students in History of Art organise a conference each year in April, which is generously hosted by the National Galleries of Scotland in the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre. Run by and for postgraduates, this symposium showcases current research in the discipline, and makes links to other disciplines. It is open to the public to attend.

More widely, our allied subject areas in Edinburgh College of Art, the subject areas of Art, Design, Music, Architecture and Landscape Architecture have vigorous and cosmopolitan research cultures. Individual students are welcome to take advantage of the enormous range of lectures and seminars that are on offer.
In addition, the museums and galleries of Edinburgh often run excellent education and interpretation programmes, including talks by artists, critics and historians, and occasional study days and conferences.
