SCCS will continue to develop collaborative research activities as a Centre of Excellence for Scotland in its research areas of modern architecture and housing and conservation.
The DOCOMOMO International Specialist Committee on Urbanism is based at SCCS (chaired by Miles Glendinning).
Its recent activities have included the organisation of three major conferences in 2009:
They also include a major new international research initiative on the history of mass housing. This extends the comprehensive approach pioneered for the UK in Miles Glendinning and Stefan Muthesius’s book Tower Block, 1994, to a global level.
The Tower Block project has already undertaken pilot research studies of mass housing in Hong Kong and Singapore.
SCCS will continue to be a Scottish focal point for Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland (AHSS) research conferences and Edinburgh Cockburn Association events.
In addition, the eca Cast Collection project team are developing international links with the new Acropolis Museum in Athens, the Canova museum in Possagno, and the Accademia and Opera del Duomo in Florence, based on the shared history of their collections.
