Overview

Introduction

In 1800 the University of Edinburgh was the first Anglophone University in the world to teach economics as an independent subject. Two centuries later, economics at the University of Edinburgh is a growing, vibrant department with strengths in several areas of modern economics.

Programmes available

We offer two postgraduate programmes: an MSc by coursework and a PhD by research. The number of students on both programmes has increased considerably over the past few years.

Our PhD programme in Economics offers you the opportunity to learn the latest methods for economic research and to specialise in your chosen topic.

MSc in Economics or Economics (Finance)

The Masters course is taught in Edinburgh but is part of the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics, which is a collaborative venture between eight Scottish universities.

The course lasts for one year and leads to the award of MSc Economics or MSc Economics (Finance). We also welcome applications from students who wish to study part-time.

The MSc is designed to provide you with a high quality and thorough training programme in economics.

This course also forms the compulsory year of coursework and research training for the Doctoral Programme.

PhD in Economics

Our PhD programme in Economics offers you the opportunity to learn the latest methods for economic research and to specialise in your chosen topic.

If you intend to study for the PhD you are required to take an MSc in Economics before starting the PhD. Most of our students take the MSc here in Edinburgh. However, we also welcome applications for direct entry into the PhD programme in Economics at Edinburgh from those who have completed an MSc or similar graduate qualification in Economics at another university.

We offer a limited number of full scholarships to highly qualified candidates.
