I came to New College in December 2011 after 15 years at Glasgow University.
My teaching and research focuses on two distinct disciplines.
My primary research is in classical Islamic law (fiqh), juristic arguments and the interface with contemporary ethical issues.
My second area of interest is in Christian-Muslim relations and its theological history. This has developed gradually over the years partly inspired by my involvement in a series of international seminars called Building Bridges, convened by the former archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.
Throughout my university career, I have always been involved in public life and among my many engagements I currently chair the BBC’s Scottish Religious Advisory Committee.
