Trained in physics and theology, I am fascinated by the ways in which the scientific revolution continues to alter attitudes towards religious belief and perceptions of reality. Active in physics for many years, I am known (with Steve Bramwell of UCL) as the discoverer of 'spin ice', an amazing model system that has revolutionised research into magnetism, and provided evidence for the magnetic monopole, a Holy Grail of physics.
I am not only interested in physical reality though. Having decided to train for ordained ministry in 1999, I discovered theology, a moment of awakening not unlike that provided by my first chemistry set at the age of 10! After a long spell in church ministry, I now combine these interests through teaching Science and Religion at Edinburgh.
