
Following graduation, Bob worked initially at Pirbright in a diagnostic but principally research environment exploring the epidemiology of a range of viruses of major economic consequence, gaining his higher degree in Applied Immunology. He moved to the University of Glasgow in late 1987 studying aspects of vaccine development to lentiviruses. He acquired the corporate biosafety management portfolio in the mid-1990s, with training featuring either to small or moderate sized groups on a regular basis. He gained the NEBOSH Diploma in 1996 and IOSH Chartered status in 2006. He remains, or has been, a member of various professional bodies including the European Biosafety Association, contributing for 4 years to its Scientific Working Group, the Institute in Safety, Technology and Research and continues as an active member of HSE’s Scientific Advisory Committee for Genetic Modification.
