Alternative science careers

Description

Do you want to use your scientific background in a career outside of pure R & D?  This session offers an insight into a range of alternative options from practitioners working in science-related careers. Presenters will discuss careers in fields such as: health and safety, quality assurance, forensic science, radiological protection, the nuclear industry and the British Antarctic Survey. The event is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students and research staff within the School of Science and Engineering. You can book a place via the MyEd Event booking channel. Breaking into the environment

Description

Interested in environmental careers? Come along to Breaking into the Environment, organised by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM). Presenters will discuss careers in fields such as environmental economics, waste management, ecology (with Scottish Natural Heritage) and marine chemistry. Speakers include Elaine Henderson, Secretary IEEM (Scotland) & Project Officer, Highland Birchwoods, Valerie Calwell, Environmental Economist, Jacobs Engineering UK Ltd, Andrew McBride, Wetland Ecologist, Scottish Natural Heritage, Kristine Ritchie, Waste Management & Metals Recycling, Sims Waste and David Thomson, Assistant Marine Chemist, Scottish Environment Protection Agency(SEPA). Civil Service Fast Stream

Description

Learn more about the Civil Service, the work of Fast Stream Civil Servants and the qualities they need. What is their role? How do they influence decision making? How do they make a difference?  This is an interactive case study, based in a fictitious town, which has been allocated a share of government funding to regenerate its inner city. Attendees will be asked to take part in a role playing exercise with lots of competing factions all trying to influence government spending and priorities. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end. Come and find out if you can influence Ministers! (n.b. fictitious Ministers for the purpose of this exercise).

Day in School

Description

Explore what it is like to teach in a Scottish secondary school and discover what skills and qualities are required for success.  Gain insights into teaching from members of staff and classroom observation.  Find out how to apply for teaching in Scotland and England.

The school can only take 1 or 2 students for each school subject area (Art and Design, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, CDT, Drama, English, Modern Languages, History, Mathematics, Music, PE, Physics, and RME). There is £15 cost to cover lunch and transport to Balerno Community High School. Register your interest online, and also download the application form at

Return the completed form to the Careers Service Reception on the third floor, Main Library Building,  or at the Careers Service in the Weir Building, King's Buildings with a £15 cheque (payable to University of Edinburgh) as soon as possible, and by Monday 23 January at the latest. We will contact you to let you know whether you have been allocated a place.  You will not be considered for a place unless you submit the application form and cheque.

DFID are holding a presentation to launch their new Graduate Development Scheme.  The scheme offers a diverse range of opportunities in areas ranging from DFID’s UN policy to youth development initiatives, united by a single goal: to tackle poverty and improve the lives of people in developing countries.  It is a paid, 50 week graduate programme and offers the chance to be involved in valuable projects in a department suited to your skills, experience and career aims.  You could work in one of the following areas: Africa Policy & Development; Conflict, Humanitarian Crisis & Security; EU, UN & Commonwealth Policy; Private Sector Development; Stabilisation; Civil Society; Youth Development and Policy; World Health; Agriculture, Food & Nutrition; Global Education Development; Aid Project Analysis, Procurement, Value for Money & Audit; IT, Finance and HR.  If you are in your final year of study, come along to this event to find out more.  The programme is open to undergraduates and postgraduate students, including those studying at MSc and PhD level.  To be eligible to apply for the graduate programme, you must be: a UK national; a national of a member state of the European Economic Area (EEA); a Swiss or Turkish national; or a Commonwealth citizen with an indefinite right to remain in the UK without employment restrictions.
