From 1st August 2011 careers and employability support for eca students and graduates is provided by the University of Edinburgh Careers Service which currently offers this support to students from the wide range of academic disciplines across the University.
The Careers Service is now in our new, purpose-designed location on the Third Floor, Main Library Building, George Square; we look forward to welcoming you.
Within the Careers Service you will be able to access a wide range of information (paper and electronic) and support from staff.
As well as being able to access the reference resources currently available, you will find a wider range of materials to help in your career planning and search, such as Advertisers Annual, Fashion and textiles: the essential careers guide.
Information staff are on hand throughout the day to help you find the most appropriate resources and to handle initial queries. Lots of support is available via our website, but you will also be able to pick up some self-help resources from the students association office base in Lauriston Place.
Many eca students already make use of the SAGE vacancy database to access jobs on graduation; SAGE is currently advertising graduate jobs with over 550 employers. You will now also be able to access the part-time and vacation jobs which we advertise on SAGE.
Over 750 employers have advertised with us so far this year - everything from an Assistant Florist to a Summer School Teacher at the Zoo and Museum Attendant to a Poker Dealer. We work hard to ensure a wide range of vacancies are available and will be putting particular energy into ensuring relevant organisations are targeting student in the new eca.
The Careers Service currently runs four careers fairs each year and promotes over 90 on-campus presentations from employers. We work with Schools across the University to deliver relevant, bespoke employer events focused on, and targeted at, particular students or subject areas. We will be exploring with colleagues in the new eca the type of employer events which will best meet the needs of the new eca students, such as continuing the successful creative industries event.
Each School has a named link Careers Adviser involved with delivery to, and within, the School. This includes delivering sessions as part of the curriculum in partnership with academic colleagues, and offering stand alone workshops on key topics.
The adviser for the new eca is Maureen McIntyre, who has joined us from eca bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience. If you are looking for individual advice you will be able to speak to Maureen or one of her colleagues from the adviser team - just ‘phone ahead to book an appointment. We like to offer some drop-in sessions in Schools - watch out for details of these once Semester starts in September.
We supplement delivery within Schools by offering a range of inputs in central campus locations - this can be lunchtime or early evening CV sessions, or input from employers on what it’s like to work in particular career areas, e.g. advertising. These sessions are advertised on our website and through a pocket guide which we distribute widely.
For more information about the range of services and resources on offer look at the Using the Careers Service section of this site and follow us on Facebook.
Drop in and visit us: Third Floor, Main Library Building, George Square or call ahead to book an appointment (0131 650 4670).
When semester starts watch out for more information around campus and through inputs in your subject area. We look forward to working with you.
