About us
The Institute of Quantitative Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IQB3) brings together researchers from a range of backgrounds to tackle fundamental questions in biology and to develop biology-based solutions to real-world problems. Our research approaches encompass the structural and functional analysis of individual macromolecules, quantitative modelling of cellular pathways and processes, and the manipulation of biological systems for practical applications.
We are supported in this work by outstanding facilities and a strong network of interactions between researchers from both within and beyond the School of Biological Sciences. Members of IQB3 lead two undergraduate honours programmes – ‘Biochemistry’ and ‘Biotechnology’ - and a number of taught masters’ programmes, including ‘Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology’, ‘Systems and Synthetic Biology’ and ‘Drug Discovery and Translational Biology’. We are proud that our programmes prepare students for a diversity of career paths. The institute is also home to a vibrant community of PhD students, who enter with undergraduate degrees in a range of subject areas, including biology, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer science.
Recruitment of Independent Fellows
Independent Research Fellowships in the Institute of Quantitative Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IQB3), The School of Biological Sciences, The University of Edinburgh.
IQB3 provides a vibrant research environment, access to state-of-the art facilities and exemplary support for ECR researchers. Independent Fellows play a key role within IQB3 and are eligible (and encouraged) to supervise research students, participate in teaching, and to be fully engaged in all aspects of the Institute. Several of our current staff are on fellowships, and the record of our fellows transferring to permanent positions at the end of their fellowships is exceptional.
We have recently updated our procedures for the review of independent research fellowships. Potential applicants for externally funded independent research fellowships will be considered twice yearly. Applications are invited from outstanding researchers who wish to apply for an Independent Research Fellowship, including but not limited to, a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, a Royal Society University Research Fellowship or a BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship.
The next call for applications will be in spring with the deadline 5pm (UK) on 17th March 2023.
To apply, please email a 2-page summary of your research plan along with a 2-page CV to IQB3FellowSupport@ed.ac.uk by the advertised deadline. You should also arrange for three letters of recommendation to be emailed directly to the same address no later than the advertised deadline for your application to be considered.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to give a virtual seminar to the Institute in the following month.
Following the seminars, the Institute will identify candidates they wish to support, and successful candidates will be assigned mentors, who will work with them throughout the preparation and submission process as they organise their fellowship applications.
