Fees and funding

We offer studentships to cover some or all of the costs of studying at Edinburgh. You may also fund your studies yourself, or by an external sponsor.

Tuition fees

The University Registry provides information on tuition fees for PhD and MSc programmes.

Funded studentships available through the School

UK and other EU applicants

We award funding for approximately 50 Masters and PhD studentships per year to applicants from the UK and other EU countries. This includes studentships funded by:

UK students can receive a full studentship award which will cover both tuition fees and living costs

Non-UK resident EU students are only eligible for the fee component of these awards. Successful applicants for funding may therefore only receive a partly-funded studentship.

All studentships are awarded competitively. Please indicate if you would like to be considered for a funded studentship in your online application.

Overseas (non-EU) applicants

A limited number of partly or fully-funded scholarships may be available through the School, and we can provide information on other scholarships for which you may be able to apply.

In particular we encourage exceptionally gifted overseas students to apply early for Scottish Overseas Research Studentship (SORSAS) awards.

Many of our overseas students are self-funding or are funded by government scholarships or by other organisations in their home country.

Studentship application deadlines

Second round deadlines for students who would like to be considered for funded studentships:

* PhD studentships in the Institutes of Evolutionary Biology, Immunology and Infection Research and Molecular Plant Sciences: 16th March 2012

Applicants with their own funding will be considered throughout the year.

Graduate and staff discount schemes

If you have graduated from the University of Edinburgh you may be eligible for a 10% discount on your fees.

If you are a member of staff at the University you may be eligible for a staff scholarship.

Cost of living

Budgeting for living costs is an important part of planning for funding your study.

All fully-funded studentships and scholarships awarded by the School include a stipend sufficient to meet normal living costs.

Partly-funded scholarships will not usually meet all of your living costs.
