Facilities

Researchers from outside the Institute are welcome to use our facilities.

Flow cytometry

We have facilities for the laser-based, multi-parameter measurement of characteristics of biological particles in a single cell suspension, as they flow in a liquid medium past an excitation light source.

This can be applied to whole cells as well as prepared cellular components such as nuclei or organelles.

The equipment also provides a method for dissecting a heterogenous mixture of biological cells into discrete sub-populations, one cell at a time, based upon the specific light scattering and fluorescent characteristics of each cell.

It provides fast, objective and quantitative recording of fluorescent signals from individual cells as well as physical separation of cells of particular interest.

Expert support and technical assistance are available to help with the design and development of experiments.

Caesium source

We have a caesium source, which is available to external users. Please see contact below for more information.

Pathogen imaging

We have a Leica SP5 confocal laser scanning microscope, which can be used for fixed or live samples up to derogated containment level three. It is housed in the basement of Ashworth 3.

Training and assistance for new users is available through dedicated technical support by the facility manager. We can also provide further scientific and technical guidance as needed.

We would be pleased to evaluate new applications or to support small pilot or feasibility experiments at nominal rates. Please contact us to discuss costings for grant applications.

Genepool

The Ashworth Bioinformatics Support Service aims to assist researchers in the Ashworth laboratories with all their bioinformatics needs.
