Decision making

How the Student Survey Ethics Committee makes decisions on survey applications.

Process for approval of applications

On receipt of an application the Secretary to the Student Survey Ethics Committee forwards the information to members for their consideration and response. When a survey is to be conducted on Student Association Property the approval of the student representative on the Student Survey Ethics Committee is essential.

The decision of the Student Survey Ethics Committee, which is final, is notified to the applicant by the Secretary and recorded in a spreadsheet.

Criteria for survey approval

Should a member of the Student Survey Ethics Committee refuse permission for a survey to go ahead it will be for one of the reasons below.

  1. Solely for commercial gain and of no benefit to students
  2. Unrealistic timescale
  3. Not of sufficient relevance and interest to students and the University Community
  4. Sensitive nature of topic requiring unavailable back up services (counselling)
  5. Inappropriate content, wording or mode of operation
  6. Unsound format and method
  7. For the purpose of a dissertation, theses or assignment research
  8. Inappropriate timing as it conflicts with either another survey or activities within the academic calendar
