Title: What a mute child tells us about language
Abstract: For most children, the ability to speak and understand language develop in concert, with what children can say being fairly commensurate with what they can understand. Sometimes, however, children with language disorders appear to understand much more than they can say. I will present the case of a dyspraxic child who is essentially mute, but has apparently normal receptive syntactic, lexical and phonological development. I will discuss the implications of such a child for theories of language development.
