Honorary Professor: John McKnight

Dr John McKnight

John McKnight has been made an Honorary Professor in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine.

John McKnight graduated with Honours from Queens University, Belfast in 1983.

He was a research fellow in the Sir George E Clark Metabolic Unit, Belfast, from 1987 to 1989 (Professor Brew Atkinson).

From 1992 to 1994, he spent two years as a research fellow at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University, Boston (Professor Norman Hollenberg).

He was appointed Consultant Physician at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh in 1994.

Dr McKnight has been chairman of the Scottish Diabetes Survey Monitoring Group for the last 10 years and was Speciality Advisor from 2004 to 2010.

He chaired the Diabetes SIGN Guideline 116 (2010) and currently chairs the National Clinical Data Advisory Group of Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

He was appointed Lead Clinician for Diabetes in Scotland in 2011.

Dr McKnight’s current research activity includes a diabetes prevention study (PODOSA with Professor Raj Bhopal) and a study into the remote monitoring of diabetes (TELESCOT with Professor Brian McKinstry).

He is a founder member and grant holder of the Scottish Diabetes Research Network, with a particular interest in epidemiological studies based on the Scottish Diabetes Survey.
