SRA shares expertise on joint PhDs
Dr Nathalie Mather-L’Huillier, of the University’s Student Recruitment and Admissions office, last month delivered a keynote lecture at the 2012 Niigata Graduate Research Forum in Japan.
The title of her talk was “Joint-Awarded PhD Degrees: Enhancing the Student Experience and International Research Collaborations”.
The symposium was part of an international project funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
International exchange
The symposium focused on international exchange in education and research.
Participants included current masters and doctoral students as well as researchers from Asian universities with which the University has long-standing research and education links.
Dr Mather-L’Huillier, Postgraduate Recruitment & Admissions Manager (Research), has been working on the area of jointly-awarded degrees alongside Vice-Principal Professor Mary Bownes and colleagues in the International Office for a number of years.
Institution-wide agreements
The University has a range of institution-wide agreements as well as subject-specific ones with world-class university partners.
Professor Mary Bownes’ team has also developed template documentation and guidelines for colleagues recruiting students onto these schemes or exploring options for new agreements.

The symposium was a fantastic opportunity to discuss with colleagues and Ministry representatives how to implement jointly-awarded PhDs with prestigious Japanese institutions.
