Key appointment

The University has appointed Gavin McLachlan as Chief Information Officer.

Gavin McLachlan

For the past six years, Mr McLachlan has worked at University College London (UCL) as Deputy Divisional Director for the Information Services Division and Director of Technology and Research IT Services.

Prior to working at UCL, he held a number of senior IT management positions in private sector organisations spanning the IT management service, educational IT service, insurance and apparel industries.

Mr McLachlan is due to take up his post at the beginning of February 2015.

He replaces Professor Jeff Haywood, who is to take on a new role as Vice-Principal Digital Education.

Crucial role

Mr McLachlan will lead the Information Services Group.

He will be responsible for the strategic development and efficient delivery of a wide range of services, including IT infrastructure, library collections and digital curation, and learning and teaching services.

The Chief Information Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring that the University remains at the forefront of technological innovations that promote a world-class user experience for staff and students.

I was extremely pleased to have such a strong field of candidates for this position. I warmly congratulate Gavin on his appointment and look forward to working with him and welcoming him to Edinburgh.
