Medals for University athletes

Two athletes with University links have won silver medals in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Swim team

In the swimming pool, Michael Jamieson, a 22-year-old member of the University Swim Team, came second in the men’s 200m breaststroke event.

Michael missed out on gold by just 0.12 seconds, while fellow University Swim Team member Kris Gilchrist finished fifth in the same event.

Chris Jones, Head of Performance Swimming at the University, is coach for the Scotland Swim Team at the Games.

Meanwhile on the track, Eilidh Child - a University graduate who now works as a PE teacher in Perth - won silver in the women’s 400m hurdles.

The two medals won so far in Delhi mean that competitors with links to the University have now won 27 medals at past and present Commonwealth Games.

Sporting links

In all, 35 athletes, coaches and sports staff with links to the University are participating at the Games.

Of this number, 34 are part of the Scotland squad, while one features for the Isle of Man.

The Games take place between 3 - 14 October 2010. After Delhi, the next Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow in 2014.
