Professor Tom Devine, Senior Research Professor in History, has been awarded the inaugural Royal Society of Edinburgh Sir Walter Scott Prize for his outstanding contribution to the study of Scottish History.
In announcing the award the Society drew attention to Professor Devine’s ability to communicate to a broad public audience the findings of his scholarly study, and his “prolific contribution to Scottish historical literature and brought Scottish history alive for audiences around the world”.
His founding and developing the Research Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies at Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh’s Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies was also recognised.
This is the first Sir Walter Scott Prize awarded by the Society in recognition of “excellence in the Humanities and Creative Arts”.
