Mentoring involves building a supportive, non-managerial relationship to enable an individual’s professional development. The next round of recruitment to the University of Edinburgh Mentoring Connections programme opens in September. This programme provides academic and support staff with time and space to meet with a mentor/mentee to talk through a variety of issues that affect them at various stages of their career and development, for example work life balance, career development, or promotion paths.

Organised by Martyn Pickersgill (Edinburgh Medical School) with presentations from two guest speakers Euan Adie (founder of altmetric.com) and Paul Naish (publisher at Taylor & Francis)   Euan will introduce altmetrics, and how it can be of benefit to academics; Paul will speak about how publishers are increasingly using altmetrics to consider the reach of research. There will be plenty of time for discussion about the practicalities of altmetrics: both for individual researchers seeking to evidence audiences for their research, and for members of promotion and review committees, interested in how altmetrics can help to make a case for progression.

The School of Engineering will host the 4^th annual University of Edinburgh Women in STEMM Workshop on the 23^rd of June to coincide with National Women in Engineering Day. Following on from last year’s event held in Physics this day provides an opportunity for all male and female academics, research staff and PhD students across the STEMM subjects to hear from inspiring women. The afternoon will focus on networking and will end with a drinks reception. The full programme can be found here.

This is now a compulsory course for anyone hiring people on grants, and will need to be renewed every 5 years in the same way as the PhD supervisor briefings.

Applications are now open for Talent Returns – a research career break management programme, which is being piloted at the University of Edinburgh.

The programme is aimed at researchers planning a career break or currently taking time out of work, and looking to relaunch their research career upon their return. Up to 25 participants from all subject areas are eligible to take part in the pilot programme, which includes a practical and inspirational workshop to be held at the University of Edinburgh on Tuesday 24^th June 2014.

A 1-day event at the Wellcome Auditorium of The Queen’s Medical Research Institute, Little France, University of Edinburgh. This event seeks to provide inspirational role models to encourage young female talent, including undergraduate students, to achieve their potential in academic medicine and the medical and related sciences.

Susan McNeil from HR will give a 30 minute presentation on the promotion process within the university and Karen Chapman will talk about her career. There will then be an opportunity for networking.
