Africa-Wide Information comprises an aggregation of 50 databases sourced from Africa, Europe and North America. Africa-Wide provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary information which documents research and publications by Africans and about Africa. Africa-Wide covers close to 4 million news articles,  scholarly publications articles, books, reports, theses, citations, and grey literature. Records include article abstracts and some full text with keyword indexing to enhance relevant retrieval. The coverage is comprehensive from the 18th century to current and dates back to the 16th century. Africa-Wide Information is an essential resource for those with an interest in African research and publications and for those doing research in an African context, no matter the subject field. Description: Agricultural Census data for England, Scotland and Wales downloadable or visualised as grid square estimates at 2km, 5km and 10km level of resolution.

Description: Bibliographic database of citations to the agricultural literature created by the US National Agricultural Library (NAL) and its co-operators. The records describe publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines.

Description: The electronic version of Biological Abstracts for information about contents of journals, meetings, patents, and books in the life sciences and biomedical research. Covers pre-clinical and experimental research, methods and instrumentation, animal studies.

CAB Abstracts

Description: CAB Abstracts is the world's leading agricultural database. Find journals, books, conferences and reports. It covers significant research and development literature in the fields of animal and crop husbandry, animal and plant breeding, plant protection, genetics, forestry, veterinary medicine, aspects of human health, human nutrition, rural development, leisure and tourism and the management and conservation of natural resources.

Columbia Gazetteer

Access information: Access on and off campus.
Description: The Columbia Gazetteer of the World Online contains over 170,000 articles or entries on all types of places throughout the world; both physical places and political entities.

Description: The database of Engineering Index, providing coverage of the world's significant engineering and technological literature including journals, books, technical reports and conference proceedings.

Access information: Available from EDINA (Choose Login via UK federation) Users are required to register with Digimap the first time of use. Follow instructions provided.
Description: Digimap is an EDINA service that delivers Ordnance Survey Map Data to UK Higher Education. Data is available either to download to use with appropriate application software such as GIS or CAD, or as maps generated by Digimap online. Digimap allows users to view and print maps of any location in Great Britain at a series of predefined scales.

Environment Digimap

Access: Available from EDINA (Choose Login via UK federation) Users are required to register with Digimap the first time of use. Follow instructions provided.
Description: Environment Digimap is part of the Digimap suite of on-line mapping services. Providing land cover mapping from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), the service includes Land Cover maps from 2007, 2000, & 1997.
  Users will be able to view maps through their web browser, save maps for printing and download the map data for use in geographical information systems.

Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA) 1969 - present

Geology Digimap

Access information: Access on and off-campus. Choose Login via UK federation.
Description: Part of the Digimap Collection of online mapping and data delivery facilities. Geological maps and data from the British Geological Survey. View maps, save them for printing and download the geological map data (scales ranging from 1:625,000 to 1:50,000) for use in geographical information systems. Complete coverage of Great Britain is available except for a few areas of Wales at the most detailed level. There is also access to the Lexicon of Named Rock Units which has details for many of the rocks found on the map. Guides and demonstrations are available.

Description: Produced by the American Geosciences Institute, this comprehensive geosciences database contains 3.4 million bibliographic records to the geosciences literature. Over 3,500 journals are reviewed for indexing in the GeoRef database as well as books, maps, government reports, conference papers, theses and dissertations.

Description: Records with abstracts of articles published, in more than 6,500 physics, computer science, electronics, electrical engineering, control engineering journals and conference proceedings. Published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Indexes arXiv content.

Landmap Spatial Discovery

Access information: Access on and off campus.
Description: Spatial data resource which can be used for a wide range of applications within many disciplines. Optical, Radar and Elevation satellite datasets are available.

Lyell Collection

Access information: Access on and off campus.
Description: Features the full-text content of the Geological Society journals, special publications and society book series. The content is fully searchable.


Access information: Access on campus, and off campus via the VPN.
Description: SPEOnePetro is a library of technical documents, conference proceedings and journal articles serving the oil and gas exploration and production industry.
Note: It is not necessary for users to register to use the service. However, registration provides additional features, eg saving search strategies and setting up email alerts of relevant new content.

SciFinder (personal registration and University IP address required)

Access information: Requires personal registration. Off-campus, you must be accessing the University network via the VPN service.
  After 20 minutes of inactivity sessions will be closed automatically.
Description: Bibliographic information and abstracts of articles published from more than 10,000 journals. Covers chemistry (all aspects), chemical structures and patents, chemical engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, genetics. Information on more than 50 million chemical substances.
  Search by chemical structure or text. Full reaction searching allows you to specify reaction sites and map atoms in the reactants. Also, information on patents, chemical suppliers and regulations. Cited reference searching is possible.

Description: Abstract and citation database containing both peer-reviewed research literature and quality web sources. Covers over 20,000 journals from health, life, physical and social sciences and the humanities.

Sociological Abstracts

Description: Primary resource for accessing the latest research in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Draws information from an international selection of over 2,600 journals and other serials publications, plus conference papers, books, and dissertations.
  Records added after 1952 contain in-depth and non-evaluative abstracts of journal articles.
