African Writers Series

Description: The African Writers Series is the electronic edition of the historic African Writers Series published by Heinemann Educational between 1962 and 2003. The online edition includes over 250 volumes of fiction, poetry, drama and non-fictional prose over these four decades by such authors as Nelson Mandela, Chinua Achebe, Tayeb Salih, Steve Biko, Ama Ata Aidoo, Nadine Gordimer, and Buchi Emecheta.
  The database is fully searchable at the full-text level and is also integrated within Literature Online (see separate entry in this Databases A-Z list).

Africa-Wide Information comprises an aggregation of 50 databases sourced from Africa, Europe and North America. Africa-Wide provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary information which documents research and publications by Africans and about Africa. Africa-Wide covers close to 4 million news articles,  scholarly publications articles, books, reports, theses, citations, and grey literature. Records include article abstracts and some full text with keyword indexing to enhance relevant retrieval. The coverage is comprehensive from the 18th century to current and dates back to the 16th century. Africa-Wide Information is an essential resource for those with an interest in African research and publications and for those doing research in an African context, no matter the subject field. Description: allAfrica's news and information archive is a distinctive large and growing collection containing over 3.6 million articles and documents. AllAfrica collects and aggregates articles from African news organizations, as well as documents and releases from several hundred governmental, nongovernmental and international institutions.

Anthropology Plus

Access information: Access on and off campus.
Description: Brings together into one resource the highly respected Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and Anthropological Index, Royal Anthropological Institute from the UK. It provides extensive worldwide indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, edited works, and obituaries. It offers excellent coverage of all core periodicals in the field in addition to local and lesser-known journals. Anthropology Plus contains bibliographic records only.

Description: Anthrosource is a portal to full text anthropological resources. Search Anthropological Association (AAA) publications , plus a complete electronic archive of all AAA journals to the present.

ATLA Religion Database with ATLA Serials

Access information: Access on and off-campus.
Description: Covers all aspects of religion. ATLA Serials include full text access to over 80 journals. Citation information will indicate where full text is available.
Coverage: Religion Index I: Periodicals 1949 to date, Religion Index II, Multi-author works 1960 to date, Index to Book Reviews in Religion 1949 to date, Research in Ministry 1981 to date.

BLDS (British Library for Development Studies)

Access information: Free access on and off-campus from BLDS.
Description: Depository library at The Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, for publications from international organisations (including the UN system and World Bank) with a strong collection from developing countries.
Coverage: Contains over 150,000 records of documents on economic and social development including serial titles held and monographs acquired since 1987 Journal articles selectively indexed since 1990.

CIAO - Columbia International Affairs Online Columbia

Access information: Access on and off campus.
Description: A source for theory and research in international affairs containing a wide range of scholarship on that includes working papers from university conferences. Each section of CIAO is regularly updated with new material.

Description: Covering the period 1974–1996 in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Eastern Europe, the JISC selection of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Reports includes a wealth of transcripts of broadcasts and news from around the world all translated into the English language.

Global Missions and Theology

Access information: Access on and off campus.
Description: This collection documents a broad range of nineteenth century missionary activities, practices and thought by reproducing personal narratives, organizational records, and biographies. While focusing on the United States the collection also highlights activities in Africa, Fiji and Sandwich Islands, India, China, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Hawaii.
  Images are taken from microfilm originals of early printed works.

Description: A comprehensive archive of the European literature on all aspects of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.
Coverage: From 1906 to current. Over 3,000 journals are monitored for inclusion in the database, together with conference proceedings, monographs, multi-authored works and book reviews.  Journals and books are indexed down to the article and chapter level.

Description: Covers articles published in journals and in miscellany volumes. All subjects relating to the Middle Ages are included, within the date range 300-1500 AD. Geographical areas covered are Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Description: Full-text journal archive service providing access to complete back runs of all the scholarly journals currently available in JSTOR. Recent volumes are excluded, usually the last 3-5 years, but each year a further year is added to the archive.
  Each title is listed in DiscoverED.
  The collections currently available are: Arts & Sciences 1-15; Biological Sciences; Health & General Sciences; Ireland.  The 19th Century British Pamphlets Collections is also available via JSTOR.

Description: The database provides transcriptions of Olive Schreiner’s more than 4800 extant letters located in archives across Europe, the US and South Africa, with detailed editorial notes and background information, thanks to the Olive Schreiner Letters Project ( The letters are fully searchable with free text or with the Boolean search method. Transcriptions include every insertion and deletion as well as the main text. Guides to the archival locations of all her letters are also available.

Description: Translated Texts for Historians book series makes available historical sources from 300-800 AD translated into English, in many cases for the first time.
  The geographic range covers Syria, Arabia, Armenia, Georgia and Egypt in the East; North Africa; major cities of the Roman Empire (Antioch, Alexandria and Constantinople); and Spain, Gaul, Italy, Britain and Ireland in the West.
  Types of writing include histories, chronicles, letters, annals, formularies, compendia, political speeches, military and theological handbooks, poems, documentary sources, records of church councils, biblical and theological commentaries, sermons, church histories, Christian treatises, Christian and pagan panegyric and polemic, Neoplatonic texts, Lives of saints, bishops and popes.
