Logging in and out

Before you can use the PC, you will need to log in to your personal account.

Logging in

When the computer is ready for use, you will see a box of instructions. If the computer is 'asleep', you will have to move the mouse or press spacebar to wake it up first. (If the login box still doesn't appear, you may have to switch on the computer and/or screen by pressing the power button.)

  • Hold down the [Ctrl] and [Alt] keys, and press the [Delete] key once.
  • Click 'OK' to accept the regulations for workstation use.

  • Enter your University Username in the first box.

If you are a student, your username is the letter 's' followed by your matriculation number, which can be found on your student card. Members of staff and visitors to the University should have been issued a username and initial password.

  • Enter your open-access computer password in the second box.

If you have registered with EASE, your open-access password should be the same as your EASE password, though it is possible to have them set differently. If you do not know your password, or are having trouble logging in, please contact the IS Helpline.

  • Click 'OK'.
  • Wait while you are logged in. A web browser window will open, showing a page of information. After reading the alerts, you can close the window.

Difficulty logging in?

If you can't log in, please see our FAQs on Usernames, Passwords and Access.

Logging out

When you are finished using the computer, you must log off. If you don't, other people will be able to access your files and print using your credit.

Do not press the switch on the computer, or otherwise shut down the computer.

  • Click on the 'Start' button, and select 'Log Off'.

Locking your computer

If you need to leave your computer for a little while, for example to make a phone call or go to the toilet, you should lock the computer to prevent anyone using it while you are away.

Computers may be locked for a maximum of 30 minutes. After that time, the computer will automatically log you off.

  • Save all your work.

If you don't do this and your computer logs you out, you will lose your work.

  • Hold down the [Ctrl] and [Alt] keys, and press [Delete] once.
  • Click the 'Lock this computer' option.
