Reading Music

Coinciding with the opening of the newly refurbished St. Cecilia’s Hall, this exhibition curated by Dr Jenny Nex explores the rich history of the University’s music collections.

Featuring Sebastian Virdung’s Musica Getutscht – the oldest printed manual on musical instruments, Robert Marr’s record of musical performances at the 1886 International Exhibition of Industry (held on the Edinburgh Meadows), and account books of Edinburgh-based musical instrument makers, it highlights the breadth of the collections and underpins the vibrancy of Edinburgh’s musical scene.

Reaching back to the 16th century, the University’s historical musical instruments are recognised as a nationally significant collection.
