Dr Iain Murray Wins EUSA Teaching Award

[2015] Congratulations to Dr Iain Murray on winning the 2015 Van Heyningen Award for Teaching in Science and Engineering.

The EUSA Teaching Awards recognise innovative and inspiring teaching and highlight the many individual success stories across the University.

Established in 2009 by the Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA), the awards are part of an ongoing commitment to highlight the importance of excellence in teaching alongside the University’s research activity.

The winner in each category was chosen by a panel of students, based on the strength of the supporting statements made in their nominations and the number of nominations they received.

Iain was awarded the Van Heyningen Award after receiving many positive responses from his students:

“He prepared practice exam questions (on top of past exams) and told us to submit the answers for feedback… He will always try to provide us tricks on how to approach complicated concepts from an intuitive perspective… He has a mid-semester course survey so we can provide anonymous feedback on how the course is going… He would always include a little puzzle related to what we were learning!”

Congratulations also to Informatics PhD student Alina Selega who came runner up for the ‘Best Student Who Tutors Award’:

“She goes above and beyond to make sure we’re on track. For instance, she has encouraged us to contact her outside of tutorial hours if we ever have questions, and has held extra sessions (I assume most likely unpaid) to help us through understanding material required for assignments. She is talented, dedicated, humble and approachable. In sum, a truly extraordinary tutor.”
