What is Informatics?

The study of the structure, the behaviour, and the interactions of natural and engineered computational systems.

Research excellence

The School of Informatics has produced more world-leading and internationally excellent research (4* and 3*) than any other university in the UK in the REF 2014 assessment for computer science and informatics.

Teaching quality

The School of Informatics has a first-rate reputation for teaching having received a top ‘excellent’ rating in the most recent Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC) Teaching Quality Assessment exercise.

MOOCs at the School of Informatics

The University of Edinburgh has joined the Coursera consortium, and in July 2012 became one of its first partners outside North America. Coursera offers short online courses from top universities in an increasing range of subjects, all entirely free of charge.
