CHSS Knowledge Exchange & Impact Grant

The College of Humanities and Social Science (CHSS) Knowledge Exchange & Impact (KEI) small grants may be awarded for projects engaging with policy, professional practice, industry or community audiences, with the purpose of increasing impact of research through mutual exchange.

There are two deadlines in 2015-2016. The first is now closed so the next date for applying to this grant is 21 April 2016.

Please contact the Knowledge Exchange Office at with any queries before you submit your application to your school.

ESRC Impact Grant

From summer 2014, the University of Edinburgh is sparking impact from social science research with funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Our ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) enables us to strengthen links with research users, share best practice, and together realise impact in more flexible, responsive and creative ways. This will be distributed by way of an ESRC Impact Grant.

If you have a research project with clear potential for generating impact, you may be eligible for one of our ESRC Impact Grants. We welcome applications from researchers working on ambitious projects in active partnership with one, or more, user organisations. Partner organisations will be expected to match our grant, either in kind or in cash.

AHRC Follow-on Funding for Impact and Engagement

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Follow-on Funding scheme is open to current and previous AHRC award holders for additional knowledge exchange activities that use innovation and creativity in engaging new audiences to increase the benefit of research. Up to £100,000 is available over one year.

Edinburgh has had several awards under this scheme, so please contact us for advice.

Scottish Funding Council Innovation voucher

The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) has an Innovation voucher scheme to facilitate relationships between academia and Scottish Small and Medium Enterprises (private or third sector). The award is up to £5,000. The sum applied for needs to be matched in cash or in kind by the company. Please contact us before applying for one of these.

EPSRC Impact funding

Have you had funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council? Or do you work in a field that could be supported from EPSRC? Then you may be eligible for funding to increase the impact of the research. View the Research Impact webpage below and contact us for further information.

Collaborative Doctoral Awards

AHRC and ESRC both provide funding for PhDs conducted in collaboration with non-academic organisations. AHRC runs an annual competition whereas for ESRC these are run through the Scottish Graduate School for Social Science.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) grant provides funding for an associate to solve a problem for a non-academic organisation under supervision of an academic. The partner provides some of the costs towards the programme.

Pathways to Impact

All research councils require applicants to develop potential pathways to impact for their research, and to cost activities to generate impact as part of their proposal. Also other funders encourage engagement with non-academic stakeholders to increase the impact of the research.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss how you can develop pathways to impact from your research.
