Ethics procedures for academic staff (including postdoctoral fellows)

Before primary research commences on a new project, academic staff should complete the Level 1 self-evaluation form and return it to the School Research and KE Office (room 2M.27, William Robertson Wing) or e-mail it to hca-research@ed.ac.uk. If no risks are identified, the project can proceed and no further action is required.

If risks have been identified as a result of this process, a more detailed assessment must be completed using the Level 2/3 form.

The Research Office may monitor the implementation of arrangements for dealing with ethical issues through the lifetime of research projects. Researchers should ensure they keep a record of how ethical issues are being addressed in the course of the research (e.g. consent forms, disclosure processes, storage of data). Staff should contact the secretary or chair of the School Research Ethics Committee if any unanticipated ethics issues arise in the course of the research or after the completion of the project.
