Kung Fu History: Film Showing

Martial arts films are perhaps not a source of historical information often considered by historians. And yet, the historical narratives presented by martial arts films reach audiences of a size that few historians will ever reach.

What is more, former art-house directors in the PRC are increasingly turning to historically inspired martial arts films, which are commercially rewarding and politically uncontroversial. High time, therefore, for a historian’s not entirely serious reading of Chinese historical martial arts films of the last forty years.
