About your studies
Studying at University is very different to other types of learning you may have encountered. Find key information on this and sources of support here.
Starting your studies can seem overwhelming, but below is some fundamental information which will help you get started.
The University's academic year is divided into two semesters. You can see semester times, teaching blocks and examination dates on the university website and add these to your own calendar to keep you on track.
Please note that students must be available at exam times during the academic session.
All students are expected to be actively engaged with their studies. This means going to classes, answering emails from staff, attending meetings with your Student Adviser, handing in coursework and attending examinations (including reassessed coursework and resit examinations). These engagement points are recorded and monitored throughout your studies.
Attendance requirements and absence
Year group meetings are very useful sessions where you can find out about things like careers and services available to you as a student. Attendance at these meetings is compulsory. Find out when your year group meetings for Semester 1 are taking place.
The Institute for Academic Development (IAD) within the University has a wide range of workshops, self-study learning resources and experts you can talk to to help you succeed in your studies.
Learn is the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) platform and as an HCA student you will automatically be enrolled on it. It contains help and advice for your studies and regular updates and alerts sent directly to you.
Anything you need to know about your studies in general – such as policies, information about assessment, suppport - can be found on the UG student website, in the 'About your Studies' section.
