Counselling, Psychotherapy and Applied Social Sciences

CPD courses

We offer a varied Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and practitioners working in related fields such as nursing, social work, dementia and teaching.

Living in the Aftermath of Death: an Introduction to Counselling Approaches to Bereavement

This course explores grief and bereavement following recent, previous and unresolved bereavement experiences. The course also looks at theoretical frameworks which describe and work with expected, prolonged and complicated grief. It also considers the impact of this work on the practitioner.

Creative Practices: Poetry and Psychotherapy

This course provides an opportunity to explore creativity and to relate this to the theory and practice of psychotherapy. We will do this through intensive close reading of poetry and examination of the constraints of poetic form.

Counselling and Dementia

This course provides an advanced examination of the emotional support needs of people diagnosed with dementia and how to meet those needs through therapeutic listening. Students will develop their theoretical understanding as well as their therapeutic skills in this area.

Applications to courses

A unique feature of the CPD courses provided by Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Edinburgh is that students have the option to take them for academic credit or as standard CPD should they wish.

Visiting tutors

Teaching of our Continuing Professional Development courses is augmented by the expertise of visiting tutors from various professional backgrounds.
