Global eHealth Master’s student and President of the Society for Telemedicine and eHealth in Nigeria, Dr Olajide Joseph Adebola, organised his 9th Nigerian Conference on Telemedicine and eHealth from 3-4 December 2015. The conference theme was ‘The Business of eHealth’ with the support of the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health and was the first of its kind in the region.

The two-day National eHealth Summit held at the Banquet Hall of National Women Development Center, Abuja, drew participation from the UK, America and in-country Telemedicine and eHealth experts and policymakers. Dr Claudia Pagliari, the programme Director from the MSc in Global eHealth at the University of Edinburgh also delivered the keynote speech at the conference by connecting online from Scotland. The conference made recommendations to the Nigeria government on placing eHealth on the national development agenda by establishing appropriate governance mechanisms to advance eHealth as part of the state programme.

Speaking as a Commonwealth scholarship student on the MSc in Global eHealth programme at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Adebola spoke about how this experience has impacted his work.

The Global eHealth programme is rich in content especially the ’Business of eHealth ‘course which provided an explanation why most eHealth developmental efforts fail at country level. The importance of setting up a governance mechanism which enables eHealth to thrive and weave into the fabrics of a national health system very much informed our recent conference theme
