Testing tensile strength

Mechanical testing can be performed in the department of Orthopaedics and Trauma research laboratories using a Zwick/Roell z005 mechanical testing machine. This is a 2-axis testing device capable of applying 5kN of force and 100Nm of torque. Loading can be applied individually, simultaneously or sequentially. Monotonic, creep and relaxation testing and staircase loading of samples can be performed in either axis and loading programs can be custom designed to meet requirements. Data-capture of applied load, displacement and time are measured to enable detailed analysis of sample mechanical properties.

The laboratory is equipped with small and large sample holders and platens allowing for a large variety of samples to be tested in many popular testing modes such as three and four-point bending, compression and torsion.  Projects have ranged from many small samples of material to full scale testing of orthopaedic implants.
