Careers Consultants

Our Careers Consultants specialise in providing support to students in particular Schools within the University and some work on projects to enhance our services to students and graduates.

Our Consultants also contribute to the central provision at the Careers Service including our programme of talks and workshops.

Helen Stringer

Helen leads the team of Careers Consultants working across all three Colleges and is responsible for developing strong academic partnerships. A history graduate, she has ten years' experience in the careers profession including practitioner and management roles within higher education. Helen is also the link Careers Consultant for the School of Health in Social Science. Helen works Monday - Friday.

Suzanne Agnew

Suzanne is the link Careers Consultant for Moray House. She is a biological sciences graduate of the University of Edinburgh with a PG Dip in Careers Education Information & Guidance in Higher Education from the University of Reading. Suzanne worked in the Information Team for several years building up expertise in a range of career areas and knowledge of the sector before moving to the Careers Consultants team. Suzanne works Monday to Thursday and is based in the Main Library Building.

Kay Barbour

Kay is the link Careers Consultant for the School of Law and the School of Social and Political Science. She has experience across a range of roles in Careers and Student Services in Higher Education and worked for a number of other universities before joining the team at Edinburgh. Kay works Monday - Friday, and is based at the Main Library Building.

Susan Bird

Susan works with undergraduate and postgraduate students across the College of Science & Engineering. Her caseload responsibility includes the Medical and Vet Schools and the School of Physics and Astronomy. A graduate from Aberdeen and Edinburgh Napier universities, her careers path includes medical underwriting, product development within an SME and careers information work before joining the University as a Careers Consultant. Interests in careers work include transitions into, through and beyond university and writing her Physics Careers Blog. Susan works Monday - Thursday and is based at the Weir Building, Kings Buildings.

Jo Fairweather

Jo joined the Careers Service in October 2015. She is the Careers Consultant for the School of Economics and the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. Prior to working in The University of Edinburgh Careers Service Jo worked in the third sector in HR focusing on learning and development and has experience in the private and public sector in HR and career guidance. Jo works Monday - Friday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Janet Forsyth

Janet is responsible for careers provision within the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Languages Sciences, as well as centrally. A maths graduate, she has previously worked in the voluntary and charity sector and Higher Education in England, before joining the University. Her normal working days are Wednesday - Friday and she is based at the Main Library Building.

Deborah Fowlis

Deborah is the Careers Consultant for the School of Chemistry and for Chemical Engineering. She has a degree in Zoology and a PhD in Immunology from the University of Edinburgh and has worked as a postdoc in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Paris. Deborah is based at the Weir Building, King’s Buildings and works on Thursdays and Fridays.

Sarah Innes

Sarah is the Careers Consultant for the School of Geosciences. With careers experience in university careers services in the UK and Middle East, and as a practitioner in international student support, Sarah recently returned to the Careers Service at the University of Edinburgh after a 4 year career break. Sarah qualified in Careers Guidance in 1991, completing her education at the universities of Strathclyde and Birmingham. Sarah’s working days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and she works at the Weir Building, King’s Buildings.

Carol Macdonald

Carol is the link Careers Consultant for the School of Biomedical Sciences. She has experience across a range of roles within university careers services, most recently focusing on postgraduate student support. She is a graduate of both Glasgow and Strathclyde universities. Her normal working days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Sharon Maguire

Sharon is responsible for leading, coordinating and delivering developments in Careers Service support for taught and research postgraduate students, including online distance learning students. She has a PhD in life sciences and worked in medical research for a number of years before re-training as a careers professional. Sharon works Monday - Thursday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Anthea Main

Anthea has extensive experience of working in both the public and private sectors and has worked in a variety of roles in the Higher Education environment for around 16 years.  A social sciences graduate with a PG Diploma in Careers Guidance and Development she currently works with students/graduates from any discipline both at the Main Library Building and King’s Buildings.  She delivers a range of ‘core’ services including elements of The Edinburgh Award.  Anthea’s work pattern varies.

Lizzie leads the central delivery for the Careers Service. She graduated from Glasgow with a degree in English Language, then spent two years in Japan on the JET Programme, and worked in recruitment, training and development in both the public and private sector before qualifying in Careers Guidance. Lizzie works Monday - Friday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Craig Phillips

Craig is the Careers Consultant working with the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, and the School of Divinity. He has a Degree in History and an MSc in Careers Guidance and Development. Before joining the University of Edinburgh in 2014, Craig worked in the voluntary sector and as a Careers Guidance professional in the public sector in Scotland. Craig works Monday - Friday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Kirsten Roche

Kirsten is the Careers Consultant leading on internationalisation in the Service. She is an experienced Consultant who has worked in several Russell Group universities and has experience of working with students from a wide range of disciplines. Prior to working in Careers Services Kirsten worked in the third sector, HR and central government. She is also the Edinburgh Award Leader for the Edinburgh Award (Media). Kirsten works Monday to Thursday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Lynsey Russell-Watts

Lynsey Russell-Watts is the Careers Consultant working with Edinburgh College of Art. She recently completed a PG diploma in careers guidance after around 10 years as an academic in the French department at the University  of Nottingham.  Lynsey works Monday-Friday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Rachel Taylor

Rachel Taylor is the Careers Consultant working with the School of Biological Sciences.  Rachel is an English and Film and Media Studies graduate and has worked in the Information Team at the Careers Service before moving roles to train as a Careers Consultant. Rachel works Tuesday to Friday and is based at the Weir Building, King's Buildings.

Rebecca Valentine

Rebecca joined the Careers Service in 2009 and is the link Careers Consultant for the Business School and School of Informatics.  She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in geography and worked in training and development roles in the financial sector before training as a Careers Consultant. Rebecca works Monday - Friday and is based at the Main Library Building.

Matt Vickers

Matt is the Careers Consultant for the School of Engineering and the School of Maths. After a degree in geography from Aberystwyth, Matt taught English in Eastern Europe for 18 months before returning to the UK. Working for the Careers Service of Bangor University as a projects officer led to a move to Edinburgh where Matt was a Careers Information Officer for eight years, before moving into consultant work in 2006. Matt works Monday - Friday and is based at the Weir Building, King’s Buildings.
